Early Review: His Darkest Embrace

By Juliana Stone
Releases November 1, 2010
Source: Review copy provided by NetGalley for review.

The second book of Juliana Stone's Jaguar Warrior series is about the youngest Castille, Jagger who disappeared at the end of His Darkest Hunger. Jagger was a soilder in the Middle East and is facing his own demons, his memories. Skye was a prisoner of the Degas jaguars with Libby and helped her find Libby and Jaxon's baby, but then wanted Libby to tell everyone she died in the end. Why we don't know?

On Jagger's three month hitatis from reality, Skye stumbles into his territory and flips his life upside down. They have an up and down relationship because neither can trust each other. However, the chemisty is there and holding back is hurting both of them. Jagger want Skye to be his. Syke has a mission to close a portal that allows demons into this realm, but a very powerful demon is haunting her dreams. What will become of these two? You want to find out.

The Castille brothers, Syke, Cracker, Declan, Ana, and Nico make interesting relationships. As said very nicely in this book, "It was a bitch to navigate, the whole love thing."

A solitary hunter with no regard for the human world, Jagger Castille is a shifter living on the edge. It will take the woman who calls him enemy to give him a reason to live.

Jagger is a creature of the night—Skye Knightly soars in the sun. Natural adversaries, they have been joined by destiny in a mission entrusted to Skye’s family centuries ago: Nothing less than the salvation of the Earth.

Wounded and bitter, Jagger sought escape in the solitude of the jungle, driven by a need to disappear forever… until a mysterious shifter who calls to his soul and feeds a yearning long forgotten, pulls him from his dark path. A courageous warrior, Skye’s passion is equal to Jagger’s own—but can she trust a man on the edge? A man whose secrets are as devastating as her own?

Each is the other’s sole hope for survival. But a dark and twisted truth is leading them toward the ultimate sacrifice for a love they may never live to claim.

ARC Tour: Firelight

By Sophie Jordan
Releases September 7, 2010
Source: Review copy provided by Book It Forward ARC Tours for review.

This is the first book in this new series, Draki. A series about Dragons that can shift into humans so they need to hide from their biggest enemy, Hunters. Jacinda is one of these Draki who takes a risk for a morning of flying and that’s where her life takes a turn for better or worse. Hunters come hunting but one, Will, lets her go. She does not know why but she is going to find out.

Her mother packs Jacinda and her twin sister up and sneaks them out of the Draki Community at night. Now, Jacinda must try to fit in as a human and keep her Draki alive. This is a battle Jacinda must face but when she ends up at the High School with Hunters it becomes more dangerous. Will is among them. This makes the story so interesting. Will and Jacinda’s relationship is intense and strong. I cannot wait for the next book to continue Jacinda’s adventure.

With her rare ability to breathe fire, Jacinda is special even among the draki—the descendants of dragons who can shift between human and dragon forms. But when Jacinda’s rebelliousness leads her family to flee into the human world, she struggles to adapt, even as her draki spirit fades. The one thing that revives it is Will, whose family hunts her kind. Jacinda can’t resist getting closer to him, even though she knows she’s risking not only her life but the draki’s most closely guarded secret.

Waiting on Wednesday: Zombies vs. Unicorns

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event I am joining, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read selection is:
Zombies vs Unicorns
Edited By Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier
Releases September 21, 2010

It's a question as old as time itself: which is better, the zombie or the unicorn? In this anthology, edited by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier (unicorn and zombie, respectively), strong arguments are made for both sides in the form of short stories. Half of the stories portray the strengths--for good and evil--of unicorns and half show the good (and really, really bad-ass) side of zombies. Contributors include many bestselling teen authors, including Cassandra Clare, Libba Bray, Maureen Johnson, Meg Cabot, Scott Westerfeld, and Margo Lanagan. This anthology will have everyone asking: Team Zombie or Team Unicorn?

Alaya Dawn Johnson “Love Will Tear Us Apart”
Maureen Johnson “Children of the Revolution”

Creepy zombie baby-sitting story
Carrie Ryan “Bougainvillea”
Set in the same world of THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH
Scott Westerfeld “Inoculata”
Meg Cabot “Princess Prettypants”
Garth Nix “The Highest Justice”
Kathleen Duey “The Third Virgin”
Margo Lanagan “A Thousand Flowers”
Naomi Novik “Purity Test”
New York-set unicorn story
Diana Peterfreund “The Care and Feeding of Your Baby Killer Unicorn”
Is a stand-alone story set in her killer unicorn universe, and takes place in the modern-day United States. It features carnies, Sunday School, illicit kissing, and a whole lotta blood.
Libba Bray “Prom Night”
Cassandra Clare “Cold Hands”

Team Unicorn: edited by Holly Black: Meg Cabot, Kathleen Duey, Margo Lanaga, Garth Nix, Naomi Novik, and Diana Peterfreund.

Team Zombie: edited by Justine Larbalestier: Libba Bray, Cassandra Clare, Carrie Ryan, Scott Westerfeld, Maureen Johnson and Alaya Dawn Johnson.

ARC Tour: Kiss Me Deadly: 13 Tales of Paranormal Love

Released August 3, 2010
Source: Review copy provided by Book It Forward ARC Tours for review.

I got the ARC copy of Kiss Me Deadly and I was super excited to read some of my favorite authors stories early and it gave me a chance to read some new author to me. I was not disappointed by any both some where more appealing to me than others. It all depends on what you enjoy. These were my favorites.

“Errant” By Diana Peterfruend is set in her unicorn world but does not need to be read in any order for her series. It’s a interesting story with two girls who don’t understand each other: Gitta, a hunter and Elise, a noble lady. They soon work together to get what they want.

“The Spiritual Jar” By Karen Mahoney gives a second short story about Moth an 18-year-old vampire sent to London to receive a book for her sire, Theo. Who knew a book could cause so many problems. I really like Moth and her new friend Adam even though Moth does not have a full novel its enough that she is a strong character I would like to read more short adventures of hers.

“The Spy Who Never Grew Up” By Sarah Rees Brennan is a really cute story for those who love Peter Pan, the boy who thinks he is fabulous. Peter becomes a spy for the Queen who pays his fee by giving him a mother. Ashley, a great…granddaughter of Wendy who knows all about Peter and ready for him with peter spray.

“Hare Moon” by Carrie Ryan gives a short story about Sister Tabitha as a young girl and the hard decision she had to make, her own desires or the protection of the village. I really enjoyed knowing the struggles Sister Tabitha had to go through because I think it made me understand her more when she is in THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH.

“Familiar” By Michelle Rowen was a delightful short story about a witch that does not want to be a witch who picks out a runt looking tabby as her familiar who turns out to be a shifter. A very cute shifter named Owen.

“Fearless” By Rachel Vincent is a short story about a mara, a walking nightmare named Sabine. She feeds on peoples fears like a parasite. She ends up in a house for troubled girls but something isn’t right, there is no fear in the house. Not good for a girl who needs fear to eat. It is a part of her Soul Screamer universe in the pre-Kaylee days and Nash is Sabine’s boyfriend.

These other short stories were also good: “Vermillion” By Daniel Marks, “Behind the Red Door” by Caitlin Kittredge, “The Hounds of Ulster” By Maggie Stiefvater, “Lost” By Justine Musk, “Many Happy Returns” by Daniel Waters, “The Assassin’s Apprentice” by Michelle Zink.

TBA by Becca Fitzpatrick was missing from the ARC copy but I am still looking forward to it.

Favorite Quote:
From “The Spy Who Never Grew Up” By Sarah Rees Brennan
“Peter,” Ashley asked softly, “Do you know what that was?”
“Of course,” Peter said, much affronted. “A thimble.”
“No,” said Ashley, staring, “That was a kiss.”
“Didn’t it strike you as a little different from other thimbles you’ve had in the past?”
Peter looked shifty. “Well, yes.”
“Ha!”
“It was my first thimble with tongue.” Peter told her with dignity.

ARC Tour: Clockwork Angel

Cassandra Clare
Releases August 31, 2010
Source: Review copy provided by Book It Forward ARC Tours for review.

This is a definite must read from Cassandra Clare. Infernal Devices is a prequel series to The Mortal Instruments series so I was familiar with the world of Shadowhunters and Downworlders but with the addition of the historical Victorian London. I enjoyed the polite speak between the characters and how they must observe the rules of society.

The protagonist, Tessa, is an orphan besides for her older brother Nate, comes to London to join him after the death of her Aunt to be cast into a magical dangerous world. Tessa has a rare ability even among this supernatural world that many want to have her for this ability. The Magister is the mysterious one trying to get Tessa for a reason unknown to her.

Tessa ends up in the London Shadowhunter Institute where we meet Charlotte who runs the Institute with her crazy inventor husband Henry. I liked who they talked about the demon sensor used in the Mortal Instruments books so some of his inventions will work just not yet, Henry is known for his screw ups. There is Jessamine who does not want to be a shadowhunter but a Lady of London’s society. Will and Jem are both orphans who live in the Institute who have hidden backgrounds that Tessa will hopefully discover. Will is hard to understand what is going on with him but I look forward to figuring it out with Tessa. Thomas, Sophie, and are some mundanes with the sight who work in the Institute.

The story is very well written and it kept me interested the whole time I read. The ending is written so it can pick up right where it left of for the next book of the Infernal Devices series, Clockwork Prince.

Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still.
When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: Jem, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length...everyone, that is, but Tessa.

As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Infernal Devices Series

#2 Clockwork Prince (September 2011)

Shelly Laurenston's The Long Island Coven

Shelly is a new author for me and a joy to read. I started with two anthologies she wrote for the same series, The Long Island Coven. It seems that it could also be apart of her Pride Series. The Long Island Coven is a group of five very different woman with extreme power. Emma, the shy one gets stuck in this very strange town in "My Kind of Town" in Sun, Sand, Sex and Kyle, the sheriff is going to find out why Emma is in his town. It is a hilarious town with some real characters which we meet more in the next story. "The Wolf, The Witch, and Her Lack of Wardrobe" in Belong to the Night is about the head of the coven, Jamie and the Mayor of the town, Tully. Tully's father Buck comes back to town to cause trouble. Jamie and Tully will not allow it. I love how Tully always says Jamie is brilliant, gorgeous, intelligent but stupid, really, really stupid.

The Long Island Coven
Sun, Sand, Sex Anthology-"My Kind of Town"
Deputy Kyle Treharne of seaside Smithville, North Carolina, hates Yankees-even exotically beautiful ones like Emma Lucchesi. The sexy New Yorker's got trouble written all over her, and she knows more than she's telling about the increasingly strange goings-on in his town. But if the lady's got a few tricks up her sleeve, so does the lawman. And it's high time for every wicked thing to be deliciously revealed...

Belong to the Night Anthology-"The Wolf, The Witch, And Her Lack of Wardrobe"
Jamie Meacham has enough trouble controlling her supernatural abilities. There's no time for lust, or for Tully Smith, even with his smoldering amber eyes. But Tully's grappling with his own animal instincts as a powerful shifter-wolf, trying to protect all his territory-including a certain sassy witch-from vicious rivals.

I hope Mack's story is next and if I got the clues right Bear is the guy of the story.

Stormwalker By Allyson James

I really enjoyed the beginning of this new series. The little town of Magellan has some interesting characters mostly split between Believers and Unbelievers. Magic, paranormal, and mystical all find there way to Magellan so of course Janet is there to help find a missing woman.

I liked seeing Jamison, a mountain lion shifter, we met in Hot for the Holidays who suggested to the Sheriff Janet could help find his daughter, his lover Noami, and her 10-year old deaf daughter, Julie. I would have liked more scenes with Julie but there really wasn't a place for her in this story. Hopefully she will be in future books.

She decides to fix up an old hotel while there so we met Maya, the fiesty electrician who for some unknown reason hates Janet right from the beginning. They build a friendship inch by inch extremely slowly but hilariously funny.

Also, the boys in this series are not bad either. Mick is Janet's mysterious lover who kepts secrets better than anyone. Coyote, the trickster horny God who was also in Hot for the Holidays. Then Nash the Sheriff, unbeliever, ex-fiance of the missing woman, and ex of Maya. Oh yes nothing is boring with these three in Janet's life.

Half-Navajo Janet Begay comes to Magellan to investigate the mysterious disappearance of the police chief's daughter. But the people of Magellan sense that Janet is not what she seems, and they're right.

Janet possesses extraordinary power which is tied to the storms that waft across the desert. The only person who can control her when she's caught in the storm's evocative power is Mick, a dark-haired, blue-eyed biker Janet can't seem to touch with her powers. He can weild fire and not get burned, and Janet's never sure where he goes when they're not together.

Together they investigate mysterious disappearances, which Janet fears are tied to her mother's people, the mythical gods from below the earth. They are helped along the way by Coyote and Crow, but these shapeshifting gods have their own agendas.

Favorite Quote:
“Why are you still so damned protective of me?:
“You have to ask?”
“I do.”
Mick came closer still, until his face hung an inch from mine. “If you have to ask, then you wouldn’t believe my answer.” He drew away and continued wiping my hands.

Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's alone in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. Rachel Caine

Fans of the Weather Warden will enjoy the 9th book and it might be the finally to the Saga. Here is Chapter 1 & 2.

Joanne and David have already lost their powers, but that's just the beginning. The poison that has seeped into the planet is destablizing the entire balance of power, bestowing magic on those who have never had it and taking it at critical moments from those who need it. It's just a matter of time before the delicate balance of nature explodes into chaos, destroying mankind—and every living thing on Earth—with it.

Born to Bite (Argeneau, #13)
Lynsay Sands
Releases August 31, 2010

Lynsay's newest release for her Argeneau series is the 13th book. To read chapter one

Eshe d’Aureus is sent to Armand Argeneau under the auspice that she needs a safe place to hide from a rogue out for revenge, but Eshe is really on the job. She's been saddled with the task of finding out why Armand's wives keep dying, and what it has to do with his son Nicholas and the murder Nicholas is accused of committing 50 years ago. She's Nicholas's only hope of avoiding being executed for a murder he may or may not have committed. Eshe's agreed to take on the task, but that was before she realized she couldn't read Armand and he is the life mate she's been waiting for.

Armand Argeneau’s first sight of Eshe was her roaring up on a motorcycle that appeared to be aflame. That was inconspicuous?! She had the grace of a panther, the attitude of a pit bull and openly enjoyed thwarting Lucian’s orders whenever possible . . . all of which delighted him immensely . . . until he realized he couldn't read the woman and she might be a life mate. Having already lost a life mate and two wives to suspicious circumstances, Armand isn't willing to risk losing another. Unfortunately, sending her away was pretty difficult when he couldn't keep his thoughts, not to mention his hands, off her. It seems it's time to once again try to get to the bottom of the deaths of his first three wives. While Armand's tried before, he's also failed, but this time he could lose his son as well as his life mate.
