ARC Tour: Paranormalcy

By Kiersten White
Releases August 31, 2010
Source: Review copy provided by Book It Forward ARC Tours for review.

Kiersten White’s debut novel, Paranormalcy, was a fun mix of clueless meets Alias world with a teenage girl who has the power to see through any supernatural glamour which makes her the perfect agent of a paranormal agency. Evie is a 16-year-old girl who lives in the center but works to bag, tag, and brings in paranormals to the Center to be ‘neutered’ or is it more?

Evie is a normal girl who wants to go to a high school with lockers and other teenagers. She watches her favorite show Eastern Heights like it’s a religion and loves shopping even if it is only online. Her one outfit is a zebra dress with pink boots if that gives you an idea of the kind of girl Evie is. I do like her a lot.

Lish is Evie’s best friend who happens to be a mermaid and lives in a beautiful tank in the center after her lagoon became polluted. Lish can’t speak underwater so a computer translates for her so when she curses it bleeps it out so it kinda sounds like this:

“Bleep stupid bleep bleep faeries and their bleep bleep bleep obsessions. He had better stop bleep bleep bleep the bleep bleep rules or I will bleep bleep bleep the little bleeeeeeep.” All in a completely robotic monotone.

Her life takes a turn when a water-like shifter breaks into the center looking for answers on who is going around killing the very hard to kill paranormals. Lend, is a boy who keeps changing shapes but only Evie can ‘see’ the real him. She starts to fall for him, but he ex-boyfriend faerie won’t let her go that easy. Reth thinks she belongs to him. Lots of drama and tension in Evie’s life but with a big bad out there killing paranormals something needs to be done about it.

Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie's always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.

Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

Paranormalcy Series
1. Paranormalcy (Releases August 31, 2010)
2. Supernaturally (Releases Fall 2011)
3. Untitled (TBA)

A Romance For Every Mood Giveaway

Her Best Friend
By Sarah Mayberry

What's a girl to do when she's secretly in love with a friend and he's married to someone else? She gets over it. That's what Amy Parker has done. Rather than lose her best bud Quinn Whitfield with an ill-timed, crazy confession of affection, she's taken the smart route. She's eased away from him. Just enough to get past the unrequited bits. And you know, it's working.

Until the day Quinn announces he's now single. That's right. He's single. And he wants to hang out. With her. Get reconnected the way they used to be.

Oh, this is so not good for Amy's equilibrium. Daily doses of Quinn remind her of everything she loves about him. But if he's free…and she's free…well, maybe the time has come for one of those crazy confessions.

ARC Tour: Nightshade

By Andrea Cramer
Releases October 19, 2010
Source: Review copy provided by Book It Forward ARC Tours for review.

Nightshade is Andrea Cramer’s debut novel and I greatly enjoyed the start to this new series. The group of characters showed real promise for this book and have room to grow with future novels. The basic dynamic is two packs of Guardians, Nightshades and Banes, under the rule of the Keepers. Guardians are protectors for Keepers in return for housing, food, and everything else they need. Keepers are sorcerers that have strict control of the packs, almost like dictators.

Calla is the future alpha female of a new pack being made by merging the youngest of the Nightshade and Bane packs which has never been done so it makes for high tension. Ren is the alpha male and future mate for Calla because she is told she has too. She knows it is her duty and she will go through with it until an unknown human enters the mix.

Shay is a human that turns everything in Calla’s life upside down. What makes him so special and causes these feelings in Calla? It makes a love triangle where I want her with both guys, I don’t want either of them hurt. She has chemistry with both guys, fast hot explosions with Ren and slow-burning passion with Shay. Both guys want what is best for her the problem is she doesn’t know what she wants.

When I got to the end of the novel I wished I could go out now and get the sequel. It is a great new series that has tons of promise. I can’t wait to see what is in store next for the youngest Nightshades, Banes, Calla, Ren, and Shay.

Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything--including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

Nightshade Series
1. Nightshade (Releases October 19,2010)
2. Wolfsbane (Releases Summer 2011)
3. Bloodrose (Releases Spring 2012)
4. TBA (Releases Fall 2012)

BLOGFEST 2010!!!!

BlogFest 2010 is going to be so much fun this weekend I am so glad Cinnamon, our BlogFest Coordinator from A Journey of Books put this whole event together.

This year I went to lots of author signings and met some interesting people. So my theme for BlogFest is a tribute to Holly Black. She did an author signing with Cassandra Clare and it was the most entertaining one I have been too. They said they were best friends and it made such a difference in the way they interacted. It was tons of fun.

Holly Black is the bestselling author of contemporary fantasy novels for teens and children.
Her first book, Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale, was published in 2002 by Simon & Schuster. Tithe was called "dark, edgy, beautifully written and compulsively readable" by Booklist, received starred reviews from Publisher's Weekly and Kirkus Reviews, and was included in the American Library Association's Best Books for Young Adults. Holly has since written two other books in the same universe, Valiant (2005), and the sequel to Tithe, Ironside (2007), which spent five weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Valiant was a finalist for the Mythopoeic Award for Young Readers and the recipient of the Andre Norton Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature.

The Spiderwick Chronicles were adapted into a film by Paramount Pictures in conjunction with Nickelodeon Films. Released in February 2008, the film stars Freddie Highmore and Sarah Bolger, with Mark Waters as the director.

Holly has also been a frequent contributor to anthologies, and has co-edited three of them: Geektastic (with Cecil Castellucci, 2009), Zombies vs. Unicorns (with Justine Larbalestier, 2010), and Bordertown (with Ellen Kushner, 2011). Her first collection of short fiction, Poison Eaters and Other Stories, came out in 2010 from Small Beer Press. She has just finished the third book in her Eisner-nominated graphic novel series, The Good Neighbors, and is working on Red Glove, the second novel in The Curse Workers series. White Cat, the first in the series, is out as of May 2010, and is about capers, curse magic, and memory.

So for my giveaways a book Holly wrote and a book Holly edited. Tithe the first book in her Modern Faerie Tales series. Also, Geektastic is a collection of stories from the Nerd Herd from authors like Libba Bray, Cassandra Clare, John Green, Cynthia Leitich Smith and many more.

I will choose two winners, one for each book and post that after this fabulous weekend.

Giveaway Rules:
1. Leave a comment (Maybe tell what author you would give a tribute too)
2. Be a follower (New/Old)
3. Leave an email address

It’s been one year since ex-Navy SEAL Ethan Kelly last saw his wife Rachel alive. Overwhelmed by grief and guilt over his failures as a husband, Ethan shuts himself off from everything and everyone.

His brothers have tried to bring Ethan into the KGI fold, tried to break through the barriers he’s built around himself, but Ethan refuses to respond …until he receives an anonymous phone call claiming Rachel is alive.

To save her, Ethan will have to dodge bullets, cross a jungle, and risk falling captive to a deadly drug cartel that threatens his own demise. And even if he succeeds, he’ll have to force Rachel to recover memories she can’t and doesn’t want to relive—the minute by minute terror of her darkest hour—for their love, and their lives, may depend on it.

Daegan has a vested interest in Anwyn. As Gideon and Daegan shepherd Anwyn through her dangerous validation with the Vampire Council, it's clear they must learn to trust each other. But as boundaries erode, Gideon realizes he has become irreversibly changed-by a bond with the two people in his life he can't survive without: vampires.

Siren Song (Bloodsinger, #2)
Cat Adams
Releases September 28, 2010

Nothing if not resilient, Celia Graves is slowly adjusting to being a half-human, half-vampire Abomination. But her troubles are far from over. Her best friend’s murder is still unsolved, the cops are convinced she should be in jail, and her old lover, the magician Bruno DeLuca, has resurfaced in her life, saying he has something important to tell her.

The vampire attack that transformed Celia kicked her latent Siren abilities into high gear, and now she’s been summoned to the Sirens’ island to justify her existence—and possibly fight for her life—in front of the Siren Queen. Celia isn’t sure she’ll survive to make the trip. The demon she defeated in Blood Song hasn’t exactly gone quietly—he’s left Celia suffering from a powerful curse.

Taken By Midnight (Midnight Breeds, #8)
Lara Adrian
Releases September 28, 2010

At the crossroads of death and desire, a woman tastes a pleasure no mortal is meant to survive . . .

In the frozen Alaskan wilderness, former state trooper Jenna Darrow survives an unspeakable breach of body and soul. But with her narrow escape comes an even greater challenge. For strange changes are taking place within her, as she struggles to understand--and control--a new hunger. To do so, she will seek shelter in the Boston compound of the Order, an ancient race of vampire warriors whose very existence is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most mysterious of them all is Brock, a brooding, dark-eyed alpha male whose hands hold the power to comfort, heal . . . and arouse.

As she recovers under Brock's care, Jenna finds herself drawn to the Order's mission: to stop a ruthless enemy and its army of assassins from subjecting Earth to a reign of terror. Yet in spite of their resolve, a purely physical relationship without strings soon binds Brock and Jenna together with a desire fiercer than life and stronger than death itself--until a secret from Brock's past and Jenna's own mortality challenges their forbidden love to the ultimate trial by fire.
