Waiting on Wednesday: Kiss Me Deadly: 13 Tales of Paranormal Love

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event I am joining, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read selection is:
Kiss Me Deadly: 13 Tales of Paranormal Love (Anthology)
Multi-Authored
Releases July 27, 2010

Full of dark seduction and modern romance, this short story collection presents a variety of talented voices sure to satisfy every werewolf, ghost, fallen angel, zombie, and shape-shifter’s dark desires.

1. Maggie Stiefvater
2. Becca Fitzpatrick (Patch from Hush, Hush is in it)
3. Rachel Vincent (Soul Screamer Story)
From Rachel's blog, "I turned in page proofs for "Fearless," my short story in the upcoming Kiss Me Deadly anthology. As usual, there are things I wish I could change/tighten, but time's up for that one, and I believe the book comes out in August. If you read the Soul Screamers series (especially after you've read My Soul To Keep) you might be wondering what's next for Kaylee. The answer to that is: Sabine. This new character turns Kaylee's world on end in My Soul To Steal, and the "Fearless" story is your chance to see Sabine through her own eyes, five months before we get a good long look at her through Kaylee's."
4. Karen Mahoney : The protagonist is Moth. Karen has a story in The Eternal Kiss with Moth also. In ‘The Spirit Jar’, Moth travels to London to retrieve an ancient Arabic text from an exclusive occult collection. However, what should be a relatively straightforward mission turns into something much more dangerous – and poignant – when she finds herself joining forces with a heartbroken Djinn boy to fight an evil magician. There’s a dark spirit stalking the backstreets of London that must be stopped at all costs…
5. Diana Peterfreund “Errant” is her first a historical-set story.
6. Daniel Waters
7. Carrie Ryan (Story is about Sister Tabitha from The Forest of Hands and Teeth when she was Mary's age. It answers a few more questions about the village, the Sisterhood and Tabitha's motivation.)
8. Justine Musk
9. Daniel Marks
10. Sarah Rees Brennan
"My story in Kiss Me Deadly is called The Spy Who Never Grew Up, and it is about Peter Pan in a tux with a dead leaf as a bowtie, the Queen of England, and the captain of a crack team of killer fairies called Ninja Star."
11. Michelle Rowen
12. Michelle Zink
13. Caitlin Kittredge

Book Tour: The Crescent

By Jordan Deen
Released January 14, 2010
Source: Review copy provided by Book It Forward ARC Tours for review.

Becoming a werewolf is not an option for seventeen-year-old Lacey Quinn, but death can be a strong motivator. Lacey is so focused on her future that everyday life has passed her by. Counting down the days to her eighteenth birthday, Lacey is almost home free. But when she falls for the mysterious Alex Morris, she lands in the middle of an ancient war between two enemy wolf packs. Tempting dreams, tantalizing lies and a dangerous love triangle ensues leaving Lacey heartbroken and confused. Lacey's fate rests in the hands of Alex and Brandon, but both are pulling her strings for their own agendas. Even as she slips further into the dark world of werewolves, Lacey struggles to find the truth and save the only family she's ever know.

The protangonist Lacey's life basically sucks because her family life is horrible with a drunk as a father and enabler as a mother that fight ever night and a loner besides her best friend. When two new boys enter school and are super HOT they of course both want Lacey. Lacey does not understand why and neither did I because its embarrassing how bad she is with guys. She really can't speak and can't stop staring. If I was her I would bury my head in the sand with her lack of flirting skills.

However, despite that these two guy want her for reasons she does not know or understand. Love triangles are always messy and usually everyone has some heartbreak which makes it sometimes painful to read. This was no exception. Sometimes I blame the girl because it drives me nuts that she can't make up her mind but Lacey isn't entirely to blame. Fate and destiny plays a role in this triangle. Still, love triangles always leave someone alone.

I do like that some of Lacey's feeling felt so real. Alex is so interested in Lacey and falls in love with her so fast that it seems unrealistic but her feelings of being smothered and overwelmed because she is used to being a loner and having space to herself. Having her first boyfriend requires an adjustment period and Lacey does not get that with how fast her life changes.

Half Moon is the sequel to The Crescent is due to release later.

Review: My Soul To Keep

Rachel Vincent
Releases June 1, 2010

Rachel will be releasing the third installment to her Soul Screamers Universe where Kaylee and Nash are thrown into more adventures in the Netherworld. Kaylee never goes looking for trouble but it always seems to find her.

Kaylee is a strong protagonist with a big heart. She feels responsible for anyone she comes across that may be in danger with the big bad nasties of the Netherworld, Nash follows where ever Kaylee goes because of love for her. Kaylee’s Dad, Uncle, Tod, and Nash just wish she would leave these things alone so she will not be put in dangerous situations that threaten her life but she would not be Kaylee if she did. Kaylee needs to protect the jocks at school even if she does not like them. Both boys are dating Emma and Sophie who she needs to save even if Sophie is the Ice Bitch she is still family.

I like how the problem that Kaylee comes across just keeps getting bigger and bigger through out the book. Jocks are getting high on Frost, an addictive drug from the Netherworld, is just the beginning of the story. I don’t even see how everything is involved until Kaylee does and I like the surprise element. Everything was connected and intertwined in such a complete way and very nicely done.

Kaylee and Nash’s relationship hits some bumps when Nash is lying, acting strange, using his Influence on her, and pushing her farther than she is ready to go. I think it is realistic for all Kaylee’s insecurities to come to light with Nash being the most popular boy and her just one of the normal girls in school. She is afraid that once Nash gets what he wants he will be gone, move on like his track record shows. I like how this story flows with the main plot line but this is what I really felt connected too. I think most girls can relate to have trust issues with guys they think are too good for them. I really felt the escalating anguish Kaylee felt through the story and the painful choices she has to make.

WHEN KAYLEE CAVANAUGH SCREAMS, SOMEONE DIES
AND KAYLEE IS ABOUT TO SCREAM HER HEAD OFF...

Kaylee has one addiction: her very hot, very popular boyfriend, Nash. A banshee like Kaylee, Nash understands her like no one else. Nothing can come between them.

Until something does.

Demon’s breath. No, not the toothpaste-challenged kind. The Netherworld kind. The kind that really can kill you. Somehow, the super-addictive substance has made its way to the human world. But how? Kaylee and Nash have to cut off the source and protect their friends—one of whom is already hooked.

And when the epidemic hits too close to home, Kaylee will have to risk everything to save those she loves.

Sarah McCarty's Shadow Wranglers

Caleb (Shadow Wranglers #1)

She knew it was wrong. That’s why she wanted him.

Allie always desired mysterious, sexy rancher Caleb Johnson, but he never seemed to notice her. Until the night she's attacked by a vicious animal, and rescued by a shapeshifting vampire that she almost seems to recognize: the baritone growl, the mesmerizing eyes, the inexplicable animal attraction. That's because her savior is Caleb, and now he has no choice but to bring Allie into the shadows with him-to protect her from a rival werewolf pack, and to finally reveal his true feelings for the woman he's been afraid to love.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Allie and Caleb. Allie a 21st Century human might really enjoy being with the very sexy cowboy Caleb, but once she finds out he’s a overprotective old fashion man/vamp so there is some very passionate arguments. He is always threatening to smack her butt. I also love the Johnson brothers who will do anything to protect what they consider theirs even if you do not agree.

Favorite Quotes:
“Oh God.”

‘I told you not to look.”

“No, you didn’t. You said ‘in a minute.’ That’s not the same thing at all.”

“It is to me.”

She swallowed back her gorge. Her throat was tight in the aftermath. “I’m adding communication issues to the stuff we need to work on.”

“I communicate just fine. The way I see it, your listening is off.”

Jared (Shadow Wranglers #2)

Meet Jared-a cowboy with bit-in the latest paranormal romance from the national bestselling author.

Jared Johnson has always been a force to be reckoned with, first as an outlaw and now as a vampire. Caught in a war between immortals, he doesn't have time to waste, but when a female vampire is attacked, he can't just walk away. He expects a quick good¬bye, but what he gets is a vulnerable woman who intrigues and seduces while giving away nothing of the secrets holding her hostage.

Raisa may not have extreme physical strength, but she's been able to survive as a vampire longer than most by keeping to herself. But that's about to change. Forced to accept Jared's protection, Raisa finds it increasingly hard to resist his forbidden allure while keeping the secret that could destroy them both.

This is the second book with another one the Johnson brothers, the most strict and stick up his butt brother, Jared so when he really needed a chick in his life. Raisa is the smartest, yet sickest vampire who has a promise to keep to a friend she is trying to protect so Jared thinks she could be an enemy. Jared needs help to take her in and at the same time protect her. His internal struggles about falling for Raisa and thinking she is hiding something cause major problems for him and Raisa. He is constantly hurting her with his distrust. He employs help from a neighboring werewolf clan and the other hunky Johnson brothers. Raisa has been keeping interesting secrets that know one sees coming.

I really hope Sarah McCarty will be writing books for Jace and Slade because I do want more of the Johnson Brothers and their feisty chicks.

Author Signing with Melissa Marr

On Thursday Night, I spent the time chatting with Melissa Marr and other fans of the Wicked Lovely Series. She is one of the most laid back authors I met so far. She wanted to have the discussion part like she does in her classroom. No hands up to ask questions so it was just like talking with friends. Melissa did really good job trying to answer the spoiler questions everyone kept asking.

She was as honest in person as she does when she writes. A lot of the discussion was on Ink Exchange and how much of the book was from real experiences of Melissa's life. She showed a few of her tattoos which she added up to 40 hours of work. She learned all about the tattooing process when writing the book. Melissa could write so honestly about Leslie being a victim because she was too. I thought she was incredible strong to put it all out there and it is helping readers who had dark times too.

Also, Melissa is looking for help to petition HarperCollins Teen to release the fifth book Darkest Mercy that will be out in 2011. So twitter them, email them, all together hound them.

Giveaway and Rules:

Melissa was kind enough to sign a bookmark and 6 wrist bands for each court: Summer, Dark, Winter, High, Shadow, and for the individuals Solidary Courts.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Forbidden Game Trilogy

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event I am joining, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read selection is:
The Forbidden Game Trilogy
By: L.J. Smith
Re-released June 8, 2010

This is a re-release of L.J Smith's series she published in 1994. This is the only books of hers I haven't read yet so I can't wait. The cover is very nice also. The trilogy has three books that were published seperately: The Hunter, The Chase, The Kill and now they are being published together in one book.

To Lose the Game is To Lose Your Life

The Forbidden Game, Volume I: The Hunter

Jenny wants to get her boyfriend, Tom, a special game for his birthday party. However, she can’t help but be fascinated by the boy with the white-blond hair who sells her a strange game as a present. It turns out that the boy, Julian, is the youngest of those from the Shadow Lands, a race of evil beings who live invisibly just beside our own world. Once Jenny opens the game, she is in his land. Julian is determined to seduce her, but he has to work by a set of inflexible rules, only touching Jenny where she has reached for him.
In the fantasy house that Julian has created, where everyone at the party must face their greatest fear, Julian himself is Jenny’s worst nightmare. . . and maybe her dream lover, as well.

The Forbidden Game, Volume II: The Chase
Jenny begins to get terrifying phone calls and soon it’s clear that Julian is loose is the real world. More and more, Jenny falls under his spell, allowing herself the freedom to do as she likes, no matter the consequences. It seems that Jenny has chosen Julian over Tom. But then her friends are disappearing, sucked into the Shadow Lands, paper dolls left in their places. Can Jenny outwit Julian without giving in to his demands entirely?

The Forbidden Game, Volume III: The Kill
Jenny returns to the place where it all began; her grandfather’s house, where as a child she first met the child-Julian. A door with a strange rune on it opens to the most fantastic creation of Julian’s of all: an empty amusement park that Jenny loved as a child. Except here, all the rides are deadly. More, Jenny must survive her confrontations with an increasingly frustrated and determined Julian. Will he really kill her if he can’t have her? Jenny forces him to make the choice—and two worlds are changed forever.

Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta

I loved this book and could not put it down. It was a book set it a world of different kingdoms with the good ones and the bad ones, battling each other or ignoring each other, and rich and poor. Finnikin is the protagonist who at the age of nine loses everything dear to him, including his homeland. After a curse and the five days of the unspeakable, Finnikin does nothing but try and right a wrong he feels responsible for. Then, it fast forwards years until hes a man with a plan to make a second homeland for his people. He has good intentions.

A girl, Evanjalin, is a burden thrown upon Finnikin and all he wants is to drop her off somewhere else so he can back to his life. The girl drives him nuts which makes it hilarious. Slowly, Evanjalin becomes a girl who has a vow of silence to a strong chick who tells all the men around her what to do. Both are hardheaded and stubborn so you know there is some awesome scenes and dialogue that had me laughing and waiting for the next crazy thing they do.

I really enjoyed Finnikin of the Rock, if you are fan of Kristen Cashore's Graceling and Fire I think you will like this one too.

At the age of nine, Finnikin is warned by the gods that he must sacrifice a pound of flesh in order to save the royal house of his homeland, Lumatere. And so he stands on the rock of three wonders with his childhood friend Prince Balthazar and the prince's cousin, Lucian, and together they mix their blood. And Lumatere is safe.

Until the 'five days of the unspeakable', when the King and Queen and their children are slaughtered in the palace. And an imposter king takes the throne.
And a curse is put on Lumatere, which traps those caught inside and forces thousands of others to roam the land as exiles, dying of fever and persecution in foreign camps.

But ten years later Finnikin is led to another rock to meet the young novice, Evanjalin. A girl plagued by dark dreams, who holds the key to their return to the Land of light...

Author Signing with Cassandra Clare and Holly Black

On Saturday May 8th, I spent some time at an author signing at the Free Library of Philadelphia where Cassandra Clare and Holly Black were making an appearance. Cassie was promoting her Mortal Instruments Trilogy which has four books. This seemed to be the big joke that 4 books are the new trilogy number. Holly Black was promoting her newest release White Cat.

It was probably my favorite author appearance I have gone too and I think that is most likely because the chicks are friends. They had a comfortable way of talking because they are familiar with each other so much that they made the audience comfortable. I laughed a lot during the chatting, book reading, Q & A session. They were a lot of fun with their bubbly, light-hearted personalities.

Movie News: Holly Black's Spiderwick Chronciles was made into a movie so she knew how it happened. Holly says the only really say authors truely have is if they want to sell rights to the book or not. Depending on the studio you sell the book to depends on how much involvement you get. Holly got to share thoughts but once they started filming it happened so fast. She got to go on set and enjoyed the movie.

Cassandra Clare sold the rights to the Mortal Instruments Series to the guys who produced the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. So far the screen play is completed, they are looking for a director, and Cassie has a meeting in NY soon.
Q & A Session: My favorite question was for Cassie. In City of Glass the shadowhunters wore white to funerals so what color do they wear to wedding?
I never thought about that but Cassie said in City of Fallen Angels we learn the answer when Clary is shopping for a Brides Maid dress. Its supposed to be a funny scene with Luke, Jace, and Clary. Shadowhunters wear gold to weddings.

Do you feel sad when you end a series or move on to another series?
Holly had the best answer. She said she would hate to be the protagonist in her books. Holly said if you love a character give them a break because if she starts another book she will only bring misery and pain into their lives.

Because a war is brewing between the creatures of the dark, and Aden is somehow at the center of it all. But he isn’t about to lie down and accept his destiny without a fight. When Cassie was a little girl, her grandmother told her a fairy tale about her mother, who made a deal with the Polar Bear King and was swept away to the ends of the earth. Now that Cassie is older, she knows the story was a nice way of saying her mother had died. Cassie lives with her father at an Arctic research station, is determined to become a scientist, and has no time for make-believe.

Then, on her eighteenth birthday, Cassie comes face-to-face with a polar bear who speaks to her. He tells her that her mother is alive, imprisoned at the ends of the earth. And he can bring her back — if Cassie will agree to be his bride.

That is the beginning of Cassie's own real-life fairy tale, one that sends her on an unbelievable journey across the brutal Arctic, through the Canadian boreal forest, and on the back of the North Wind to the land east of the sun and west of the moon. Before it is over, the world she knows will be swept away, and everything she holds dear will be taken from her — until she discovers the true meaning of love and family in the magical realm of Ice.

Logan's sudden death leaves Aura devastated. He's gone. Well, sort of.
Like everyone born after the Shift, Aura can see and hear ghosts. This mysterious ability has always been annoying, and Aura had wanted nothing more than to figure out why the Shift happened so she can undo it. But not with Logan’s violet-hued spirit still hanging around. Because dead Logan is almost as real as ever. Almost.

It doesn't help that Aura’s new friend Zachary is so understanding—and so very alive. His support means more to Aura than she cares to admit.

As Aura's relationships with the dead and the living grow ever complicated, so do her feelings for Logan and Zachary. Each holds a piece of Aura's heart…and clues to the secret of the Shift.

Stormwalker
Allyson James
Releases May 4, 2010

This is the start of Allyson’s new Stormwalker series which if the cover says anything it will have a kick-ass female heroine. The prequel to the story is in Hot for the Holidays. The next two books are Firewalker and Shadowwalker due out in November 2010 and May 2011, respectively.

Half-Navajo Janet Begay comes to Magellan to investigate the mysterious disappearance of the police chief's daughter. But the people of Magellan sense that Janet is not what she seems, and they're right.

Janet possesses extraordinary power which is tied to the storms that waft across the desert. The only person who can control her when she's caught in the storm's evocative power is Mick, a dark-haired, blue-eyed biker Janet can't seem to touch with her powers. He can weild fire and not get burned, and Janet's never sure where he goes when they're not together.

Together they investigate mysterious disappearances, which Janet fears are tied to her mother's people, the mythical gods from below the earth. They are helped along the way by Coyote and Crow, but these shapeshifting gods have their own agendas.
